Planning a trip to Vietnam but not sure when to go?
The tricky thing about Vietnam is that there isn’t one perfect month for the entire country. Vietnam stretches from north to south, and Hanoi can have completely different weather from Da Nang or Phu Quoc at the same time.
The easiest way to plan your trip is to understand Vietnam’s three main weather regions and then choose the destinations that suit your travel month.
If you’re looking for the simplest answer, March to May is one of the best periods for a countrywide Vietnam trip, while other months can be excellent if you choose your region carefully.
Vietnam’s 3 Weather Regions
| Region | Popular destinations | General pattern |
|---|---|---|
| North | Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang | Cooler winters, hot summers |
| Central | Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Nha Trang | Warm; wetter later in the year |
| South | Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc | Warm year-round; dry & wet seasons |
This is why searching for “Vietnam weather” isn’t particularly helpful. The weather you experience depends heavily on where you’re going.
Vietnam Weather by Month
January–February: Cooler North, warmer South
Northern Vietnam can be cool, cloudy and misty, particularly around Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Giang. Mountain areas can feel surprisingly cold.
Central Vietnam is milder but can still see rain, especially around Hoi An and Hue.
Southern Vietnam is warm and relatively dry, making Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc good choices.
Best for: Southern Vietnam and travellers who enjoy cooler weather in the North.
March–April: One of the best periods overall
This is one of the easiest times to plan a multi-region Vietnam itinerary.
Northern Vietnam becomes more comfortable, while Central Vietnam generally has pleasant, warmer weather. Southern Vietnam remains warm and relatively dry.
Best for: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Hoi An, Phu Quoc and countrywide itineraries.
May–August: Summer + Central Vietnam beaches
Temperatures rise across the country.
Northern and Southern Vietnam become hot, humid and wetter, while Central Vietnam is generally the better choice for beach weather.
Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang can be excellent options during these months.
Rain in the North and South doesn’t necessarily mean rain all day — showers can often be short and followed by sunshine.
Best for: Central Vietnam and beach holidays.
September–November: Excellent North, wetter Central Vietnam
This is an interesting period because Northern Vietnam can be beautiful.
Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Giang and Sapa can offer cooler, more comfortable sightseeing conditions, with the northern mountains particularly scenic around the harvest season.
However, Central Vietnam becomes increasingly wet, especially in Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue. Heavy rain and flooding are possible, particularly later in the season.
Southern Vietnam is still wet but gradually moves towards its drier season.
Best for: Northern Vietnam.
December: Warm South, cool North
December once again gives you very different weather across the country.
Northern Vietnam can be cool, cloudy and misty, while Southern Vietnam is warm and generally much drier.
Phu Quoc is particularly appealing if you’re looking for a tropical beach escape.
Central Vietnam can still experience rain.
Best for: Southern Vietnam and travellers who enjoy cooler Northern Vietnam.
So, When Is the Best Time to Visit Vietnam?
It depends on your itinerary.
🌿 Want to travel around the whole country?
March–April is one of the best periods to consider.
🏖️ Want a beach holiday?
Look at Central Vietnam from roughly March–August, or Phu Quoc during its drier months.
⛰️ Want Sapa or Ha Giang?
September–November can be particularly beautiful, especially around the harvest season.
🌇 Want Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Northern Vietnam?
September–November is a lovely period, while March–April is another good option.
☀️ Want Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc?
December–April generally offers the best combination of warmth and drier weather.
What About Vietnam’s Rainy Season?
Don’t let the words “rainy season” automatically put you off.
Vietnam doesn’t have one nationwide rainy season. Different regions experience their wetter periods at different times.
And rainy season doesn’t necessarily mean rain all day.
You might have sunshine in the morning, a heavy afternoon shower and clear skies again in the evening.
The bigger consideration is what you’re travelling for.
If you’re visiting for beaches and sunshine, weather matters much more. If your trip is about food, culture, cafés, shopping and sightseeing, occasional rain is much easier to work around.
My Biggest Vietnam Weather Tip
Don’t plan your trip around finding one “perfect” month.
Instead, ask:
“Which part of Vietnam has the weather I want during the month I’m travelling?”
If you’re travelling during a shoulder season, leave some flexibility in your itinerary. Keep outdoor activities movable, check the forecast a few days before travelling, and have a few indoor alternatives ready.
That way, even if the weather doesn’t go exactly according to plan, you can still make the most of your trip.
Vietnam is a year-round destination — you just need to choose the right region for the season.
