Top 10 Instagrammable Spots in Rothenburg (Germany)

They say if it’s not on social media it didn’t happen! As funny & silly as that sounds, I think you’ll agree with me that we all like to take pictures when we travel…and for me personally (as much as it is for my line of work) I always scroll my phone to revisit places and relive memories from my travels! 🙂 Today I want to share with you the Top 10 Instagrammable spots in Rothenburg (Germany). If you are on Instagram and have a thing for travelling I am sure you would be no stranger to this Bavarian fairy tale town and its architectural beauty … so let’s dive straight in:

1. Röderturm

Röderturm, Rothenburg ob der Tauber

One of the most charming thing about Rothenburg is the fact that the city walls built in the medieval times to protect the city are still intact and the entire city is adorned by several Towers. This beautiful structure was the first one we spotted on our trip.

2. Fleisch-und Tanzhaus

Rothenburg has tons of half-timbered buildings, especially in the market square, but this specific one caught our eye! Fleisch-und Tanzhaus literally means (translates to) meat and dance-house. In the olden days, butchers used to sell meat on the ground floor, whereas the upper floor was the city ballroom. These buildings are now used to display art by local artists.

3. View from the Town Hall Tower

Climbing the narrow stairs to the top of the tower is an experience in itself! The viewing platform is super narrow (and a tad bit scary!), but the views are MAGNIFICENT! This is one of my favourite Instagram spots in Rothenburg 🙂

4. Burggarten

This public garden offers beautiful views of the city. This picture was taken from Burggarten and you can see the Faulturm Tower on the right and the Siebers Tower in the center. Fun fact – Faulturm tower is also known as the Rotten Tower because back in the day, they left dead bodies of criminals here to rot away underneath the tower…yikes! It’s also one of the tallest and deepest towers in this city.

5. Burgartern (a different perspective)

If you continue to wander around the gardens, you’ll surely find many interesting and picturesque spots to take some great photos. We particularly loved this spot.

6. Rothenburg City Walls

Rothenburg ob der Tauber City Walls

Remember we talked about the colourful and beautiful half-timber buildings/houses earlier? Well, if they weren’t magical enough to stare at while standing in the streets, you can also view them in all their glory from Rothenburg’s timeless Medieval walls! These fortified stone walls were built to protect the royal castle and the city and even though the castle is not there anymore, the walls were well preserved and still stand. There are several towers connecting the walkways, and you are free to climb any of the entrances and exit as and when you please 🙂 Personally, this was one of the most memorable and magical Instagram spots in Rothenburg and I’m glad we experienced it on our trip!

7. Plönlein

This medieval crossroads is perhaps the most iconic and photographed place in Rothenburg and quite rightly so. Since it is quite popular with the tourists, we suggest visiting it early in the morning or late in the evening to get your postcard pretty pictures here.

8. Wengasse

Just a few meters away from Plönlein there is this amazing street with colourful houses which photographs beautifully. Instagram spots in Rothenburg couldn’t get better than this! The best part is that people are so preoccupied with looking at Plönlein that they don’t pay much attention to this street and that’s why it almost always relatively empty.

9. Herngasse with Castle Tower

As we stepped out from Burgartern and started walking back towards the city centre, we looked backed and saw this insanely beautiful sunset 🙂 We say this time and time again – ALWAYS take a moment (or 10) to stop and look around at your surroundings when you’re travelling. You’ll be amazed at the beauty you find in an unexpected corner or moment! This was ours in Rothenburg 🙂

10. Klingentor

Like I said before, there are several different walks and entry/exit points along the city walls, but this is the one from where we exit our self guided walking tour. As we were headed for breakfast, we noticed these small buggies that rode along the cobbled streets with tourists (I’m guessing it’s some kind of city tour) and we couldn’t help but take this picture. It’s such a stunning backdrop, don’t you think?!

11. Bonus* : Rail Tracks

I won’t lie, but this has be one of my favourite pictures from Rothenburg! Fall is probably the best time of the year to visit Europe (at least for us) because we love the colours and falling leaves. On our last day, we came across a rail track that was surrounded by beautiful trees and fallen leaves…and then we discovered that the tracks did not lead any further, so we took a minute to get this shot 🙂  I won’t tell you where exactly this is, but I’m hoping if you ever visit Rothenburg you go find this spot, take a picture and then tag me in it ;P
