4 Days in Salzburg | Our Itinerary (What To See & Do)

If you have been following our blog posts you would know we had an amazing autumn vacation in Europe last year. We started off at Munich and concluded our vacation in Prague. Salzburg was our second stop and in this post, we shall talk about how we spent 4 glorious days in the beautiful city of Salzburg.

Mozart’s birthplace and the backdrop for the famous musical, The Sound of Music, that’s what Salzburg is… but let’s not sum it all up just yet, as Salzburg has much more to offer. _ From beautiful Baroque architecture, to a true Bavarian Alpine backdrop, from breathtaking lakes to jaw dropping views and a fantastic beer culture, this city will truly grow on you. _ Today on the Blog we are focussing on the city card that Salzburg has to offer- The Salzburg Card and whether it’s worth investing in? Head on over to my Blog to find out – Link in Bio 👆🏻 ___________________________________________________ . . . . . . . . . . . . . #salzburg #visitsalzburg #austria #salzburginfo #travel #holiday #europe #traveldiaries #travelogues #indiblogger #indianbloggers #beautyandthebeing #wanderlust #travelblogger #TravelAwesome #indianbloggers #tripoto #indiapictures #CNTGiveitAShot #lpin #lpindia #NGTindia #photographers_of_india #_soi #TLPicks #LiveTravelChannel #travelsamazingx

Before we talk about our itinerary, let us just introduce you to the best tourist card we have ever come across – The Salzburg Card, it not only covers the public transport within the city but also covers all its major attractions. In our opinion, it’s an absolute must-have. You can read about it in detail HERE.

Now without any further ado let’s start with our 4-day itinerary for Salzburg

Day 1

We arrived from Munich at around noon and straight away went to the tourist information centre to pick up our Salzburg Cards. From there on went to the H+ Hotel, our home for next 4 days, which was literally a stone throw away from the Railway station. You can read more about our stay at the H+ Hotel HERE.

After checking in we went out to explore the city using our Salzburg Card. And just a short bus ride away was our first stop, the Mirabel Gardens.

Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg

Mirabel Gardens is the perfect place to start your tour if you are a Sound of Music fan as you would instantly recognize the spots which were there in the movie. We love Mirabel Gardens for the perfect cascading view of the castle, the cathedral and the gardens, it’s simply magnificent.

Post that we went to the Panorama Tours kiosk to confirm our bookings for our day trips planned for day 3 and day 4 and from there on we took a short bus ride to the city centre. We entered through the Alter Market and the first thing we realized was that even though Salzburg has hordes of tourists, it somehow never feels congested or noisy, it has an inherent calm in its air…people are in no hurry to get to anywhere, the atmosphere is absolutely relaxed.

From the Alter Market, we strolled to the Residence Platz and explored the Panorama Museum and the Dom Cathedral. We loved roaming around the beautiful streets of Salzburg, Getreidegasse being our favourite one with its trademark wrought-iron shop signs! There’s also the Sigmund Freud Gasse with an epic view of the Old Town Hall standing tall at the far end of the road. We also visited the Mozart’s birthplace… because, how can you not when in Salzburg?! 🙂

From there on we decided to check out the views of the city and the castle from the Monchensburg Hill. Now we could have easily gone to the Museum of Modern Arts entry and taken the elevator up to the viewing point, but instead we decided to be a little adventurous and decided to trek up the hill, which naturally turned out be far more rewarding as we got to some spectacular views from different angles on the way up.

On our way back we did take the elevator and headed towards the legendary beer garden/ hall, the Augustiner Braustubl and treated ourselves with some really amazing beer and mouthwatering roasted chicken and fries and ended the feast with some really tasty sweets. We loved this place so much that we ended up going there on our last day of the visit as well! 🙂

With our stomachs full and heart content with the amazing feast, we decided to take a long walk towards our hotel and roamed around on the banks of the Salzach river and enjoyed some really spectacular views of the city. In retrospect when we think about one thing which we miss the most about our trip to Salzburg, it would be these late evening walks.

Day 2

We started our day with some black coffee and croissants at the Starbucks and from there on took the Bus No. 25 to Untersberg, Salzburg local mountain peak for some mind-blowing views. The bus ride is just a little short of 30 mins followed by a rather unending, picturesque, yet a little terrifying cable car ride. (The bus and the Cable car ride are both free if you have a Salzburg Card)

It’s advisable to wear proper shoes and carry some layers as it tends to get a little slippery and windy. We also did a bit of a hike but what we enjoyed the most was the most delicious mug of Hot chocolate served at the chalet-style café.

After spending a good 3 hours we came back to the city centre and visited the Dom Quartier and the Salzburg Museum and spent the rest of the day roaming around the streets.

Today I want to talk about one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited – a popular town in Salzkammergut…the postcard-pretty, St. Wolfgang 💗 _ This quintessential Austrian town by the lake took my breath away with its cobbled streets, legendary waterfront scenery, cute houses with slanting wooden roofs and decorated balconies, cosy restaurants, and a historic church… All of which makes St. Wolfgang a perfect setting for a memorable trip. _ Head on over to my Blog (Link in Bio 👆🏻) to read (and see) more about this magical little town 💗 _ Also, I'd like to say Thank You to @panorama_tours & Bettina for making this trip so special and absolutely PERFECT! 🙏🏻 _ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #stwolfgang #austria #salzburgpanoramatours #salzkammergut #salzburg #visitsalzburg #austria #visitaustria #discoveraustria #travel #holiday #europe #traveldiaries #travelogues #wanderlust #travelblogger #TravelAwesome #indianbloggers #tripoto #lpin #lpindia #NGTindia #photographers_of_india #_soi #TLPicks #LiveTravelChannel #travelsamazingx #thediscoverer #living_europe #TopEuropePhoto

Day 3

For our third day, we had planned for a half day guided tour of St. Wolfgang with Panorama tours which was to start at 2 pm so we woke up a little late and went to a weekly farmer’s market and enjoyed a really great Brunch. Here’s a little sneak peek of that.

Coffee at Café Sacher, Salzburg

We were back in Salzburg around 7 PM and enjoyed a great Asian dinner at Uncle Van followed by a rather royal after-dinner coffee and cake at the very famous Café Sacher and as usual we concluded the day (yet again!) with a long walk…but instead of walking by the river we decided to capture the beauty of the streets and alleys of Salzburg by the night.

'I often think that the night is more alive and richly coloured than the day.' _ Mozart's Birthplace and the backdrop for the famous musical, The Sound of Music – Salzburg is the beautiful city that does not need much of an introduction ❤️ We weren't expecting to fall so head over heels in love with this place, but well we did! Our favourite part of this city? This right here… Long romantic walks along the river at night…looking at the castle lit up in a melodious way and these mesmerizing lights reflecting off of the water… Dreamy….isn't it?! ❤️ _ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #salzburg #salzburgatnight #visitsalzburg #austria #ilovesalzburg #travelgram #salzburginfo #travel #holiday #europe #traveldiaries #travelogues #indiblogger #beautyandthebeing #wanderlust #travelblogger #traveltheworld #getaway #citytrip #ttot #placestovisit #worldcaptures #beautifuldestinations #travellingthroughouttheworld #TopEuropePhoto #living_europe #worldcaptures #indiantravelblogger #indiblogger #indiantraveller

Day 4

At the end of the Day 3, we realized that we had a lot more to explore and 3 days are way too less for a beautiful city like Salzburg and promised ourselves to come back someday.

4 Days in Salzburg | Our Itinerary (What To See & Do)

Views from Hohensalzburg Fortress, Salzburg

So, to make the most of the day we woke up early and reached the Salzburg Castle at 9:30 AM. We used our Salzburg Card for the ride up to the castle on the funicular. The views as the funicular moves up are simply spectacular. And once you reach up, it just gets better! The Castle is well preserved, houses some great museums, our favourite one was the one with puppets!

After exploring the castle for almost an hour and a half we headed back to the city centre, did some souvenir shopping, had lunch at My Indigo and left for the half day excursion to Hallstatt.

You can read about our trip to Hallstatt HERE.

In the evening, we set out to explore someplace to eat and enjoy a drink or two but call it lack of effort or sheer love for beer gardens we ended up yet again at the Augustiner Braustubl and had an amazing round of beer with some tasty treats of roasted chicken and grilled fish on the stick. As it was our last day in Salzburg, we wanted to make the most of it and so we headed back to the beautiful streets and alleys of Getreidegasse & Sigmund Freud Gasse and with that, we concluded the second leg of our Euro Trip!
