There are very few places in the world that blend old-world charm with modern luxury as effortlessly as Muscat, the capital of Oman. With its rugged mountains, turquoise seas, and a deep-rooted sense of tradition, Muscat offers a perfect blend of relaxation, culture, and adventure.
Here’s how we spent five unforgettable days exploring this beautiful city and its surroundings.
Day 1 – Arrival in Muscat & Relaxing at Crowne Plaza
We took an early morning Oman Air flight from Mumbai and arrived in Muscat by mid-morning. Our first stop was the Crowne Plaza Muscat, perched on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Oman. The hotel instantly set the tone for our trip — calm, elegant, and incredibly scenic.
The day was all about relaxation. We spent hours at the hotel’s infinity pool and private beach, soaking in the views and enjoying the salty sea breeze.
For lunch, we dined at The Edge, the poolside café… chicken satay, fries, and chilled beers — the perfect meal to accompany the view. Mocktails in hand, we watched the waves crash against the rocks below.
Evening came with a golden sunset over the horizon, one of the most magical we’ve seen. Dinner was a romantic affair at Come Prima, the hotel’s Italian restaurant, where fresh pasta and fine wine sealed our perfect first day in Muscat.
Day 2 – Muttrah Corniche and Souq Evenings
While my husband set off for a snorkelling trip to the Daymaniyat Islands, I spent a peaceful morning at the Crowne Plaza, unwinding by the pool with a book and a view.
In the evening, we explored Muttrah, Muscat’s bustling heart. We started with Muttrah Fort, catching yet another breathtaking sunset that painted the Corniche in warm hues.
A walk along the Muttrah Souq followed — an experience for all the senses. The aroma of frankincense, the glitter of lamps, and the friendly banter of shopkeepers created an atmosphere straight out of an Arabian fairytale. We picked up some Arabic perfumes as souvenirs before heading for dinner at Bait Al Luban, where we tasted authentic Omani flavours in a charming old-style setting.
Day 3 – Day Trip to Wahiba Sands and Wadi Bani Khalid
This was the most adventurous day of our trip — a day excursion to Wahiba Sands and Wadi Bani Khalid.
The drive through the desert was spectacular. The golden dunes of Wahiba Sands stretched endlessly, and the silence of the desert was almost spiritual. We stopped at a Bedouin-style camp for lunch and experienced true Omani hospitality.
From there, we continued to Wadi Bani Khalid, a lush oasis surrounded by rocky mountains and date palms. The water here was crystal clear, perfect for a refreshing dip. The contrast between desert and oasis made this day truly unforgettable.
Back in Muscat, we had dinner at Rozna Restaurant, one of the city’s most popular spots for authentic Omani cuisine. The restaurant’s traditional architecture and flavoursome dishes made it a memorable experience.
Day 4 – Sur and Nizwa
We began the day with a trip to Sur, a charming coastal town known for its iconic lighthouse and old-world charm. The drive along the coastline offered stunning views of the Arabian Sea and glimpses of Omani fishing villages.
From Sur, we continued our journey inland to Nizwa, one of Oman’s most historic cities. Known for its imposing fort and bustling souq, Nizwa gave us a glimpse into the country’s cultural heart. The fort’s round tower offered panoramic views of the old town, while the souq was filled with pottery, silver jewellery, and Omani dates.
By evening, we drove back to Muscat and ordered room service for dinner, unwinding after a long but fulfilling day of exploration.
Day 5 – Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque & Al Bustan Palace
Our final day in Muscat began with a visit to the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a masterpiece of Islamic architecture and one of the city’s most visited landmarks. The sheer scale and beauty of the mosque — especially the chandelier and carpet inside — left us awestruck.
The rest of the day was spent at Al Bustan Palace, one of Oman’s most luxurious hotels. We relaxed by the pool, swam in the open sea, and indulged in the best grilled chicken we’ve ever had at the hotel’s poolside restaurant, Blu.
As the day faded, we ended our trip with a Thai dinner at Thai Chai, toasting to a journey that was equal parts relaxation and discovery.
Final Thoughts
Muscat is one of those destinations that quietly grows on you — with its kind people, spectacular sunsets, and a rhythm that encourages you to slow down. Whether it’s the desert dunes of Wahiba Sands, the tranquil waters of Wadi Bani Khalid, or the heritage streets of Muttrah and Nizwa, every corner of Muscat tells a story.
