One of the most rewarding day trips from Muscat is to Nizwa, the historic capital of Oman. Just under two hours away, Nizwa is a town surrounded by mountains and steeped in culture, with its famous fort and vibrant souq at the heart of it all.
Exploring Nizwa: Fort, Souq & Timeless Views
The magnificent Nizwa Fort is one of the most visited landmarks in Oman. Its massive circular tower offers panoramic views of the town and the distant Hajar Mountains. Climbing to the top feels like stepping back centuries — the fort’s architecture and preserved chambers give a glimpse of Oman’s glorious past.
Just next to the fort lies the Nizwa Souq, where tradition lives on through smell and color. The aroma of frankincense fills the air, stalls overflow with silver jewellery, pottery, and spices, and locals sip Omani coffee as they chat with visitors. Don’t miss trying Omani halwa — a sweet gelatinous dessert — along with a small cup of qahwa (Omani coffee) served with dates.
Best Time to Visit Nizwa
If you’re planning a day trip from Muscat to Nizwa, the best time to go is after 2 PM. You’ll avoid the midday heat and get to experience the fort and souq during the golden sunset hours.
We opted for a private tour, mainly because we wanted to experience the sunset from the fort’s viewpoint. The tour cost us 70 OMR, plus 10 OMR for the Nizwa Fort tickets (for two people). It turned out to be an unforgettable evening — the fort bathed in warm light, the mosque silhouetted against a pastel sky, and the town glowing with a sense of calm.
After exploring, we stopped at Athar Café, a cozy spot with a rooftop terrace overlooking the fort tower and the mosque. The view from there as the sky turned shades of gold and violet was truly magical.
Later, we wandered around the souq once more, breathing in the scent of frankincense, before heading back to Muscat around 7 PM.
How to Reach Nizwa from Muscat
There are several ways to reach Nizwa, depending on your comfort and budget:

If you’re comfortable driving, renting a car is one of the best ways to travel in Oman. Roads are excellent, fuel prices are economical, and it gives you complete flexibility. - 🚌 By Bus (Cheapest Option):
The Mwasalat bus from Muscat to Nizwa departs from the Azaiba Bus Station. Tickets cost under 5 OMR (round trip per person), making it the most affordable option. While Mwasalat claims you can book online or via the app, this didn’t work for us — but you can easily buy tickets in person at the station. The bus drops you a few kilometers from Nizwa Fort, and you can take an O-Taxi to the town center. - 🚖 By Private Taxi:
If you prefer comfort but don’t want to book a full tour, you can negotiate directly with a local taxi driver in Muscat. Many are happy to offer round trips to Nizwa for around 55 OMR, especially if you plan and discuss the timing in advance.
We had considered taking the bus, but because we wanted to catch the sunset, we chose a private tour instead — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions of our trip.
