4 Days in Munich | Our Itinerary (With a Day Trip to Neuschwanstein Castle)

Legendary beer halls and beer gardens, a permanent farmer’s market, historic city centre, hearty Bavarian food, humongous public parks and a gateway to the most beautiful castle in the world, Munich is by far our favourite destination.

Today we are going to talk about how we spent 4 glorious days in this lovely city, so let’s get started.

Day 1

We arrived in Munich in the afternoon and took the S-Bahn from the airport to Hackrbrucke to reach our hotel. By the time we checked into the hotel, it was already 3 PM and we were feeling a bit tired but what kept us up was the fact that the legendary beer garden Augustiner Keller was literally a stone throw away from our hotel, so as expected, we freshened up quickly and headed straight to it!

Augustiner Keller, Munich

Sadly on the day, it was a bit too cold and grey for the beer garden to be open, but the inside hall at Augustiner was still operating and we enjoyed the famous Dunkel with some traditional Bavarian sausages.

Post that we went to a shopping complex near Zob (Main Bust station) and bought some essentials, kept them in the hotel and went straight to Marienplatz, the central square in Old town. Here we enjoyed the evening buzz with spectacular views of the New Town Hall, and other great architectures like Frauenkirche, Peterskirche and rounded up the day with gulping some big mugs of Bavarian beer, pretzels and Bavarian-style roast chicken along with a boisterous oompah music performance at the very famous Hofbrauhaus.

Day 2

The best thing about European holidays is Walking Tours. We just love walking tours, apart from being informative it also is a great way to get your bearings right about the city. We did the walking tour with Sandeman’s New Europe and you can read our full experience and review HERE.

After the walking tour, we decided to climb up the tower at the St. Peters Church. There is a small ticket booth just beside the entrance where you can buy the tickets (3 euros per person) and climb up your way through the narrow staircase, taking 300 steps to “the most spectacular view of Munich”. Believe us it doesn’t get better than this!

Church of St. Peter, Munich

After that, we sat inside the church for some time and marvelled at the stunning architecture, absolutely not to be missed. The hike up to the tower had made us very hungry and we wanted to try some delicious street food at the Viktualien Market but sadly it was a Sunday and the market was shut so without thinking much about where else to go we decided to go straight back to Hofbrauhaus and enjoyed another great round of beer and hearty Bavarian food!

Post that we wandered around the city, exploring streets which were not covered in the walking tour. We also enjoyed some street performances and captured some of the best shots of the trip on our camera and explored a few stores before calling it a day with a great meal at MyIndigo.

Day 3

This day was dedicated to visiting Neuschwanstein castle which had been on our bucket list forever. While there are several tour operators who can arrange for this, we decided to go DIY style. You can read our detailed trip report to Neuschwanstein Castle HERE.

Day 4

We wanted to wake up early and visit the Nymphenburg Palace in the morning and then English Garden in the afternoon, but that didn’t happen as we overslept a bit, so we decided to give Nymphenburg a miss and ventured to explore English Garden instead. Although initially, we struggled a little bit to navigate our way to English Gardens some friendly locals helped us finding our way.

Autumn, English Garden, Munich

We walked through the Hofgarten, took some beautiful pictures and finally managed to find the English Garden but once we were inside it took us some time to orient ourselves with the directions since the park is just so big… We first headed to see Surfers ruling the waves at Eisbach and then headed to the most awesome beer garden ever, the Chinese Turm. If there is just one thing you could do in Munich, come here, buy some food, buy some beer and share a seat with other tourists and locals and enjoy life the Bavarian style.

We saw Münchners enjoying life to the fullest even on a rather overcast day, people walking their dogs, running, bicycling their way to the beer garden, elders sitting on the benches and enjoying their conversations and Surfers challenging the water current and this just made our day.

Tip:  Do visit the New Town Hall from inside, the architecture is brilliant. There is even a lift which can take you to the top floor and while you walk down the stairs take a look at the arches on the staircase – they’re beautiful!

Well, that’s about it, if given a chance we would go back to Munich in a heartbeat. There is so much more to do, in fact, we have already prepared a to-do list for our next trip to Munich. That said, it’s unarguably understood that 4 days is too little a time to be spent in this magnificent city. Our advice is to keep much more days for Munich when you are planning your European holiday.

As promised, here’s our Munich Vlog…hope you enjoy it!
