5 Tips to Survive a Long-Haul Flight Like a Pro

Hello there and welcome to our blog!  🙂

Today we are talking all about travel and how you can cope with a long-haul flight like a pro

There’s been a surge in the demand for leisure travel lately and many of us are picking our favourite destinations from our bucket lists, some of which require us to be on a flight for over 10 hours or more. When it comes to flying, you can either choose to go for the economical/budget commercial flight option or choose a private jet charter (here’s a fractional jet ownership cost  option you can check out) for a more luxurious experience.

Personally, we have always chosen the budget friendly option for flights… so here’s my question to all of you who choose the same – are you ready to endure the long-haul flight/s to get there…or should I say – are you geared for hours of sleep deprivation, discomfort, dehydration and boredom that comes with being imprisoned on an airplane for hours?!

Well, if you ask us, we travel economy and more often than not when we are on long-haul flights, we step out of the flight feeling tired, cramped, jaded and dehydrated. However, the more we travel, the more we learn and long-haul flights are finally starting to get better for us. So today we are sharing with you some of our wisdom on how you too can make long-haul flights more bearable and even enjoyable for yourself…so keep on reading to know our 5 Tips to Survive a Long-Haul Flight Like a Pro!

Prepare Your Body

One of THE most important things to do before a long-haul flight is to prepare your body for spending hours in a specific/restrictive position. We recommend lots of stretching and walking, maybe even hitting the gym 24 hours prior to your travel. What that will do is get your muscles working and prepare your body.

Also, make sure that you are very well-rested before getting on the flight, so get your 8 hours of sleep because if you don’t, you will just end up feeling miserable and over-exhausted when you are on the plane.

Once you are on the plane, make sure you get up and move every couple of hours to stretch your legs and get the blood flowing through your body- take bathroom breaks or just simply walk around the aircraft and look for passenger-shaming opportunities!

Wear Comfy Clothes

Always remember – comfort is key on a long-haul flight. Stiff fabrics, tight jeans and digging waistbands are all awful choices for a long flight.

We are not saying wear your PJs on the flight, no! We are saying, be stylish AND comfortable. Wear your most comfy pants or leggings and a slogan t-shirt. Also, layering is a great idea because you never know when you might feel cold on the flight – so carry a blanket scarf or a jacket with you.

We can’t tell you how many times we have used a scarf or a jacket as a pillow or to block light when we try to sleep on a plane 🙂

Pack Well in the Entertainment Department!

Yes, you heard that right – pack for your entertainment yourself.

Very often we find that nothing in the entertainment section on the flight appeals to us and we end up getting really bored….or worse one of us gets stuck with a seat where the infotainment system is broken! Ugh!

So, to avoid any such incident, load up on music you love or bring with you a book you’ve been meaning to read, or even better – a saucy magazine! You can even carry a board game if you’re travelling with a friend (great to give your eyes a little break from staring at a screen for hours).

If you are anything like us, you can also carry your laptop and get a lot of work and planning done on the flight. Long haul flights are usually where we brainstorm and come up with blog post ideas!

Drink Up!

…Water, not alcohol 🙂

Nothing dehydrates the body worse than airplane travel, so keep yourself hydrated at all times. We can’t stress how important it is to drink loads of water on the flight (also before and after it) because the minute you are dehydrated, you will feel your energy levels dropping, your mood will change, you’ll feel exhausted and anxious. Not just that, it starts to show on your skin as well – that is definitely one area where we see long-haul flights affect us – dry, agitated skin that results in breakouts  🙁

So, keep drinking water every few minutes and limit the number of alcoholic beverages you consume. Staying hydrated will also help you in fighting jet lag later.

We always carry a water bottle each on long flights and keep refilling them so we know exactly how much water we are drinking and if we are not drinking enough. It’s also a great way to avoid using plastic.

Stay Feeling Fresh

There’s nothing quite like feeling clean and refreshed on a long-haul flight!

Fresh minty breath, cleansed skin and a slap of skin care can do wonders for your mood on a long flight, and that’s one reason we always carry our hygiene essentials with us in our carry on bags. Here’s a sneak peek into what we carry:

  • Deodorant
  • Toothbrush + paste
  • Facial wipes
  • Eye drops
  • Lip balm
  • Moisturiser
  • Facial mist (we love the Avene and La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water)
  • A change of clothes (or at least underpants!)

So those were our Top 5 Tips to Survive a Long-Haul Flight Like a Pro and we hope that they will help you. 🙂
