One travel tip which we always give to our friends is to go for a walking tour on the very first day of their trip. In our opinion, there is no better way than a walking tour to help you get your bearings when in a new city or country. Walking tours are quite a hit in most of the European cities and Sandeman’s New Europe is one of the most trusted operators.
We recently did a free walking tour in Munich with Sandeman’s New Europe and truly loved the experience. Ben, our tour guide, an Irishman with a great sense of humour and good knowledge about the city took us on a 3-hour fun escapade through narrow, nondescript lanes to much-known tourist’s attractions with dozes of laughter every 10 minutes.
We started the tour at the Marienplatz, the very first thing we experienced was the Glockenspiel and even though it’s considered as one of the most overrated tourist attraction we must admit it was pretty cool. In fact, we did end up watching the full show more than twice during our stay 🙂
From there on we visited almost all the important sites such as the Frauenkirche, Odeonsplatz, Munich Residence, Hofbrauhaus, St. Peter’s Church and heard several anecdotes, important historical facts and some crazy myths on the way and finally concluded the tour at the Viktualienmarkt.
Well, we are not going to spoil the fun by mentioning any of those stories here, as we want our readers to pack their bags and visit the lovely city of Munich… and have the firsthand experience of this great tour and learn about the great culture of this city.
But before we take your leave we just want to add a few words on the whole FREE walking tour Philosophy. Well, the idea is that the tour guide is a freelancer who has to pay a fee to the company as they are providing him/ her the platform and the marketing. So although the tour is absolutely free, you must always tip the guide. How much? Well, that is completely up to you, your budget and the kind of experience you have had. You see, not only does this help tourists from every income strata to enjoy a world-class tour, it also pushes the guide to give his/her 100%.
Also, this is more of an orientation tour, so the guide won’t be taking you inside any of the churches, museums or palaces. Once you are done with the tour, you will have a fair idea as to how you can plan the rest of your holiday and then you can choose and visit any of the tourist attractions elaborately.
Have you ever taken a free walking tour? If yes, which one has been your favourite? We would love to hear about it 🙂
