Makeup Bag Essentials – Part I

Getting the Base Right’

Hello and welcome back!

Hope you’re all having a good week so far and planning for an even better weekend! 😛

Today’s post is something very basic…so it’s for everyone- be that a beginner with makeup or a makeup lover (like myself!). I’m going to be sharing with you my top picks for ‘Makeup Bag Essentials’ and I’ll split this post into two separate article- the first will talk about ‘Getting the Base Right’ and the second will talk about how you can ‘Amp- Up the Look’.

Don’t worry if you don’t have some of these products on you, as it’s not set in stone…these are just some suggestions. I hope you enjoy…let’s get right into it 🙂

So the very first thing/basic step is to even out your skin and get your base on flawlessly. Here are a few ways you can go about it:

Using a Tinted moisturizer or a BB or CC cream

This works great if you’re looking for a very sheer and light amount of coverage. Also, it works great for summer months and humid climate.

Using a Foundation

Go in for a foundation of your choice (it could be a liquid, cream or powder formula – whatever suits you best), if you’re looking for a more fuller, flawless coverage.

Using a Concealer

If you’re someone who is blessed with good skin and are looking for coverage in certain areas of your face or someone who only wishes to even-out patches of redness on the face, then opt for a creamy concealer instead and use sparingly on the areas where you need it. I’ve always believed that the more sheer and light the base, the better the makeup looks! 🙂

The second step is concealing. For me personally, I tend to have two kinds of concealers – one that is close to my skin shade/ tone which is preferably a full coverage concealer and then one which is slightly lighter than my skin tone. Let’s see what all you can do with a concealer and then decide which one suits your needs the best!

Full coverage Concealer

This way you can use a sheer coverage foundation as your base and then use the concealer to cover up any blemishes or areas of concern without having a cake-face! Also a great method if you use makeup every day.

Illuminating Concealer

These concealers are great for highlighting….so pick a concealer that is at least a shade or two lighter than your skin. You can use these to highlight your under eye area and also areas around the mouth, bridge of the nose, chin and Cupid ’s bow.

Colour correcting Concealer

This kind of concealer comes in a variety of tones and is meant for colour correcting. So, let’s say you have bluish/purplish veins that show up under your eyes and on your lids… you should invest in a ‘Peachy’ toned concealer as that will cover up and counteract the discolouration.  This also works beautifully for covering up darkness and under-eye bags.

On the other hand if you have red patches on your skin, like around the nose and mouth, then go for a ‘Green’ toned concealer as the green will counteract the redness and give you flawless looking skin!

The third makeup bag essential is definitely Powder. Once again, there are various kinds of powders, so read through to see which one will fit the bill for you!

Loose Powder

These kinds of powders usually come in a jar and are very finely milled. They’re great for setting your makeup or just even to set your under-eye concealer, but why I personally prefer these is that they absorb more oil than a regular pressed powder (which is exactly what a girl like me with an oily skin needs). Another great thing about loose powder is that it helps to conceal large pores. The only thing I do not like about these is that the powder flies around everywhere and it gets a bit messy!

Pressed Powder

Pretty much everyone can use this kind of powder and these are the basic compacts that you get in almost every brand. You can just dab this around your entire face to set your makeup or use it during the day for touch-up’s or on the go to absorb any oiliness on the face. If you’re someone who gets oily through the day, then I recommend this as it isn’t messy like the loose powder and will make your makeup last longer.

So this covers up pretty much every essential you’ll need in your makeup bag to get your base flawless. I know a lot of you will think ‘Oh, what about primer?’ or ‘What about makeup brushes?’…well, the answer is- if you prep your skin before applying your makeup, i.e. if you cleanse and moisturize properly, then you might not even need a primer….as for makeup brushes, I think a set like the Sigma Mrs. Bunny Collection is ideal for anyone and everyone!

So there you have it….a 101 on getting the base right 🙂
