Brisbane has an excellent public transport system which makes it extremely easy to get around this lovely city.
We arrived in Brisbane late in the night and since the Air Train service shuts around 10 PM we had to hail a cab to get to our hotel. There is a designated Uber pick up point, but my app was acting weird, so we just hailed a local cab right outside the exit and it costed around AUD 50 to reach down town Brisbane. You can read more about transport options to and from the airport HERE.
There are two predominant taxi services in Brisbane – The Yellow Cabs 13 19 24 and the Black & White Cabs 13 22 22. Through out our visit we spotted plenty of these taxis, often waiting at a designated taxi rank. So, in case you are someone who doesn’t want to get bothered about changing bus and trains just hail one of these. You can call and book as well and both the services have their apps also.
Uber has a wide presence and it worked just fine for us apart from the initial glitch at the airport (it somehow didn’t work on my native sim on roaming but worked fine with the local sim).
The transport system in Brisbane is called the TransLink and it serves across south-east Queensland with buses, ferries and rail network. Simply purchase a Go Card and you can travel seamlessly on all the above-mentioned options. We bought ours from a 7 Eleven store and got an immediate top of AUD 30 each. The best thing about the GO card is that you can return it at selected outlets at the end of the trip and you get your security deposit and the unused balance in cash. It not only comes out to be cheaper than the paper tickets but also makes traveling within and outside the city an absolute breeze as it is accepted on bus, trains and even ferries. Just don’t forget to tap in and tap out every time you travel.
We used the Translink website extensively to plan our journey not only within the city but also for our day trip to Stradbroke Island (the ferry to Stradbroke island and the buses at the Stradbroke island are not part of TransLink hence you cannot pay for those journeys by the Go Card). You can read more in detail about the TransLink network and Go Card HERE.
There is even a free bus services within the Brisbane CBD with great frequency, we did not take advantage of it, but we surely did ride the free ferry and though a bit slow and bumpy it was a great way to get some awesome night views of the city from the river.
Brisbane is an extremely walking and biking friendly city. There are lot of attractions around the city centre on the either side of the river such as the Queen Street Mall, Botanical Gardens, South Bank Park lands and much more and the best way in our opinion to get around these attractions is on shank’s pony. So get your best walking shoes out and explore this lovely city. ❤️
