Tryst with Georgian Food

I love to travel and one of the best incentives of traveling a lot is that you get to taste a variety of food from all around the world. I make it a point to taste the local food wherever I am travelling because apart from tantalising your taste buds with new flavours or sometimes reminding you of flavours from back home, it also introduces you and warms you up to a country’s culture. Personally I feel it is also a great conversation starter with the locals and fellow travellers.

I haven’t been to Georgia yet, but when I was planning for my trip to Russia, eating in an authentic Georgian Restaurant was definitely in my to do list.

We went to a restaurant right at the Nevsky Prospekt called Khinkalnaya Na Neve (Хинкальная на Неве), it has a very nice warm ambience and since we visited just before lunch time it was rather empty. The decor looked upscale and very warm and the menu had all the traditional Georgian dishes with a good variety of wine and beer. Just what we needed!

My Thoughts on the Food

Khinkali are steamed dumplings with meat fillings. It was a bit bland for my taste buds, but wasn’t bad at all. The meat was well cooked and the best part is the hot juices which ooze out as you take your first bite, piping hot and very flavourful. We ordered 4 pieces which we felt were a bit too much as the size of the dumpling is quite large.

Chicken Luleh Kebab, more or less your regular stick Kebab, just a lot less spicier than expected and a bit chewy.

Khachapuri, the traditional Georgian bread/pizza often filled with cheese and sometimes even egg was very soft, not at all greasy (even though it has a bit of cheese inside it), and very tasty. In fact i think it was just out of the world! If you ask me, I would love to visit a Georgian restaurant or even better – visit Tbilisi just for the awesome Khachapuris 🙂

Hope you guys enjoyed reading about my Tryst with Georgian food. Please leave me a comment down below if you have ever tried Georgian food, what your favourite dishes are and any recommendations for my next travels! We love to hear from you 🙂

Cheers!

I’ve never tried any Georgian food or heard much about it really. How was the rest of your trip? It sounds so exciting 🙂 xx
