Ljubljana Card - is it worth it? A detailed review

Ljubljana Card – is it worth it? A detailed review

Like many other European cities Ljubljana also has its own official city pass which offers free access to a lot of city attractions and tours, and today we will do a detailed review for the same to help you decide if this is something you should consider investing in on your trip to Ljubljana.

We visited Ljubljana this November and felt it was the perfect time to visit this amazing place. It felt as if the city had been untouched by the mass tourism wave. The streets were not crowded and the riverside cafes were mostly filled with locals which gave a very authentic vibe to the whole city. We also used Ljubljana as our base to explore other nearby attractions such as Lake Bled and the port side town of Piran.

Ljubljana WOW

To be honest, Ljubljana is a charming little town where you can just enjoy an unplanned trip by just strolling around the beautiful city centre and enjoy local food, beer and desserts, but if you are in mood to be all touristy, Ljubljana has no dearth of touristic activities, for example visiting its castle, riding a boat and even experiencing a brewery tour.

There are three card options to choose from – 24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours and we received our 48 hours card as a collaboration with Ljubljana Tourism.

Ljubljana Card

Here’s how we used our Ljubljana Card and things we liked the most about it:

  • Public transport was completely free on the card and yes, it’s unlimited use! However, I’ll admit that we didn’t make the most use out of this, since we like to walk everywhere we possibly can.

  • Free admission to the castle + free funicular ride to and from the castle. Check out our Instagram Highlights “Ljubljana” to see the breath taking 360 degree views of the city from the top of the castle tower! Trust me, it’s so worth it 🙂

  • We absolutely LOVED the Union Experience brewery tour and cannot recommend it enough. It’s a must do for beer lovers…at the end of the tour you get to taste some Union Brewery beer, but even if you’re not a beer lover, just make the most of the card and please take the time to do this tour. It was such a wonderful experience 🙂  * We booked for this tour in advance

  • Free ride on the Ljubljana boat – You get one free ride on the card and the river cruise is such a great way to see and explore the city… just sit back and relax!

  • Free bus ride To/From the airport –  in the beginning we weren’t sure if or not this would work out for us, but after using the local bus for our one-day trips to Lake Bled and Piran, we realised that we could actually make use of this free ride to the airport quite easily. It’s a fairly short and smooth ride from the Ljubljana Central Bus Station to the airport and something we definitely recommend you make use of.

  • The visit to House of Illusions with plentiful of exhibits based on optical illusions brought out the inner child in us. It was an hour well spent and the best thing is it is open till pretty late in the evening.

  • Free Wifi – We actually did not end up using the Free Wifi as we already had data roaming activated and it worked just fine everywhere but none the less it is a great benefit to have just in case.

Let’s take a minute… I’d like to share some pictures from our travels with you 🙂

Now, let us do a cost comparison and see if one would end up saving any money with Ljubljana Card if they were to follow and do the activities which we did over the course of two days.

So, clearly there is a lot of money you can save if you intend to do lots of activities during your stay at Ljubljana, and surely there are many more attractions you can experience with Ljubljana card (with no extra cost). For a complete list of all the attractions covered you can visit the official website and choose the card which fits in your requirement. Hope you found this review helpful 🙂 Happy travelling!

Hi Doris, glad you found the article helpful 🙂
We got our cards from the tourist information center (located in the city centre). I did try to look up if you can purchase the same from the airport, but unfortunately I couldn’t find any concrete information.
I would recommend you write an email to the following address to get a proper answer:

      Hope this helps 🙂
