10 Things You Must Do in Frankfurt – Even on a Short Stay!

Often considered as the economic and transportation power house for the European Union, it is safe to say that Frankfurt is what modern day Germany looks like.

It is true that Frankfurt’s skyline is dominated by tall contemporary skyscrapers, but if you are someone seeking to explore castles, cobbled streets and get a taste for hearty German food culture, worry not as Frankfurt won’t disappoint you 🙂

Here are our recommendations on 10 Things You Must Do (and eat!) in Frankfurt. Also, you can easily do majority of these things if you’re there for a short holiday!

1. Visit the Romerberg – The historical old town centre is almost like an open-air museum, showcasing yesteryear’s architecture style with the beautiful half-timbered buildings.

2. Eiserner Steg or the Iron Bridge – This is the oldest pedestrian bridge of Frankfurt adorned with lovelocks. It connects North and the South bank of the city. March to the south end of the river Main to get some awesome views of the city.

3. Stroll through the banks of river MainThere is nothing more pleasurable than taking a leisure walk along the banks of River Main and watch boats passing by with the backdrop of the splendid Frankfurt skyline!

4. Try traditional Frankfurt food and drinks – Once you are at the south bank you can choose from several traditional restaurants and try the Hessian National drink, Ebbelwoi or the Apple wine and Green sauce (goes well with schnitzel and boiled eggs). I will be absolutely honest, the apple wine was a bit too bitter for me, so I ended up adding a bit of sprite to make it sweeter and it blended really well 🙂

5. Try Spaghetti ice cream at Eis Fontanella – yes you read that right, an ice cream made to look like pasta!!! Check out my Frankfurt highlights on Instagram to see how it’s made 🙂

6. Visit Kleinmarkthalle – This is the old school market hall. It offers some great options for a quick stop and we ate one of the yummiest sausages of our life here!

7.  Eat Frankfurter Kranz or the Crown Cake – Traditional butter cream filled cake that’s best made by German Grannys …if you can manage to get your hands on one made at home, then nothing like it or else the second-best option would be to get it at Condit Couture, a dessert shop at the Romerburg Square.

8. Visit Museums – if you are a museum geek, Frankfurt is the place for you. We didn’t have much time at our hands and hence could visit just one – the German film museum and absolutely loved it.

9. Day Trip to Eltz Castle – one of the biggest highlights of our Frankfurt trip was our self-guided trip to Eltz Castle. It’s not too far from Frankfurt, but you would need a full day to visit and see the castle at your own pace. Check out our Frankfurt Highlights on Instagram to see this fairytale castle!

10. Take a relaxing river cruise  and enjoy Frankfurt’s skyline with a different perspective.

Hope this list has been helpful and has inspired you to explore the wonderful Frankfurt city. But before you put your travel shoes on and plan your trip, do check out Frankfurt’s official city card HERE.

It comes in two options, 1 Day Ticket and 2 Days Ticket and offers free travel on all public transport in Frankfurt including transfer from airport to the city. The card also offers discounts on several museums, Zoo, River cruise and plenty of other attractions. Apart from that it also enables you to get discounts on a few select restaurants, so we highly recommend getting yourself one 🙂 Do check out their official page to see the current prices and offers.

Auf Wiedersehen!!!

I’m glad you enjoyed your visit here in Frankfurt. One more thing I would add to your list: The Frankfurt Opera! Not the Old Opera, but the real opera on Willy-Brandt-Platz, which has one of the world’s best ensembles of upcoming young singers. They typically perform four nights a week, so it’s possible to fit in an opera performance even on a short visit. And don’t worry about the dress code, because there isn’t any. Some people dress up, some don’t, and nobody minds either way.

I stayed two days in Frankfurt in summer time and loved it so much. It’s so different from the most German cities, but enjoyable. Lovely post. xx
