Where to Stay in Hong Kong? – Dorsett Kwun Tong | Hotel Review

When travelling, choosing a hotel is always quite a task and we generally narrow down our research using three simple parameters – Cost, Connectivity and Comfort. While searching for a place to stay in Hong Kong we found it particularly difficult to narrow down a hotel which scored well in all the above-mentioned parameters.

Hong Kong is largely divided into 3 regions – Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories. In the initial stages of our research, we checked out a lot of options at places like Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay in Hong Kong Island and Tsim Sha Tsui, Mongkok and Jordan in Kowloon. While almost all the options fared well in terms of connectivity, cost and comfort acted like polar opposites. So, we decided to broaden our research and found this amazing property called Dorsett Kwun Tong in the eastern part of Kowloon and even though it seemed to be a bit far away from the centre, we took the risk and booked the hotel.

Arriving at the hotel was not difficult at all. On booking itself the hotel staff had sent across a mail which had a shuttle map and lucky for us, our arrival and the shuttle timing matched perfectly so we took the airport express till Kowloon, grabbed a bite at 7 eleven and headed towards exit E3. The shuttle was there right on time and from there on it took us around 20 more minutes to reach the hotel.

The Check-in process at Dorsett Kwun Tong was a breeze and the staff on the third floor who processed our check in was extremely polite and helpful. We got a Deluxe Room on the 25th floor and the views from the room were just spectacular!

As you can see from the pictures, our room had a harbour view. The room has brown and apricot tones that create a sense of elegance and peacefulness. The bed was comfy and the size of the room compared to other properties in Hong Kong was very good. The room is designed very well, it has ample space to keep your luggage and you don’t have to shove it under the bed. There’s a 40-inch flat-screen TV in the room, an iPod docking station and you also get 24-hour Free WiFi.

There’s a workstation adjacent to the window, overseeing the beautiful cityscape of Hong Kong. There’s also a mini bar with a kettle and tea/coffee tray and a huge mirror at the entrance. We loved that there was lots of space to store your clothing and shoes.

The bathroom at Dorsett Kwun Tong is not very big, but again, very well designed. There’s a rain shower for warm and relaxing showers and you will never end up hitting the walls and doors while bathing. There’s a large sink area and the hotel provides every possible toiletry that you may require – there’s Bath Gel, Shampoo and Conditioner, Body Lotion along with all essentials like a Dental Kit, Comb, Shower Cap, Ear Buds, Cotton Rounds, etc and these are topped up every day 🙂

You also get slippers, a hair dryer and the standard safe in your room. Also, the hotel provides complimentary water bottles every day, though small, it is better than being given none!

Another thing we loved about Dorsett Kwun Tong was that the room had a free worldwide phone which we could use to make calls as well as carry in our bags while exploring the city…Dorsett has named this Smartphone Freddy…how cute is that?! It was really handy and much appreciated. There’s also a lot of other amenities available for guests – a gym, swimming pool, dry cleaning, laundry service, concierge, snack bar in the lobby and a smoking area outdoors exclusively for hotel guests.

We did take the breakfast option, which was very reasonably priced and the buffet spread was very good, mostly western breakfast, boiled and scrambled eggs, sausages, veggies, pancakes, bread, Danish pastry, cold cuts and fruits with some Chinese dishes such as Congee and sometimes a few dumplings as well. We particularly loved our morning tea at the restaurant with our breakfast. The staff is extremely polite and courteous and make sure that you have a tea/coffee waiting for you at your table every morning… we truly appreciated that 🙂

Breakfast at Dorsett Kwun Tong

A quick google search will tell you that Kwung Tong is an industrial area, which is correct but at the same time, there isn’t a dearth of convenience stores like 7 Eleven or Watsons. There is a McDonalds nearby, a few Chinese restaurants and an Indian restaurant too which is just a stone throw away. We didn’t try the restaurants but did go to McDonald’s a few times and loved it! 🙂

Kwun Tong is also popular for factory outlets for sports brands like Nike, Adidas and New Balance, and if shopping is in your to-do list for Hong Kong you should definitely not miss out on checking these outlets. In the same lane as these outlets, there is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant which is always buzzing with customers, so we decided to try it out and must admit it serves the best Egg Waffles and Fish Balls.

Coming back to the Hotel review, we feel that our stay at Dorsett Kwun Tong was very comfortable and waking up to this gorgeous view every morning felt amazing!

We feel it’s great value for money and its hardly a 10 minutes’ walk from the MTR and a big Mall which makes it well connected to the major attractions. All in all, we would say Dorsett Kwun Tong is a great place to stay if you are okay to travel a tad bit more on the MTR. As far as we are concerned we are definitely coming back ❤️
