Deciding on where to go on a short break in India has always been a no-brainer for us – simply pack a bag and take a 45 minutes flight from Mumbai to Goa. Last year we went to Goa thrice and there was not a single place we hadn’t seen or explored, so this year we thought of trying out some place new and after a bit of research we zeroed down on Kovalam.
Here are the highlights of our short 3 day trip to Kovalam.
Stay @ ‘The Leela’
If you wish to experience the sheer luxury of a quintessential 5 star, this is the place! Known to be India’s only Cliff-Top Beach Resort, The Leela will offer you a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea from its spacious rooms and suites. We stayed at the Beach View Cottage… the property is humongous and trust me when I say that those little golf carts are really made to good use here.
There’s more than just one swimming pool, vast lawns with coconut trees, an awesome sky bar overlooking the sea – perfect for those lovely sundowners, luxury Spa and a gymnasium, and an awesome private beach (well almost private 🙂 )

Speed Boat Ride
Apart from chilling at the hotel and the beach we did go for a pretty awesome speed boat ride. The boat was in superb condition and the prices were very reasonable. We wanted to check the view from the top of the light house but sadly it was shut at that time, so we would recommend you check the timings before-hand to avoid disappointment.
Experience the Backwaters at Poovar
The best way to experience backwaters is at Alleppey or Alappuzha. But since we were there for a short break, we settled for Poovar, which was only 40 minutes away from our hotel. The backwater ride was a bit stretched and boring, but you can always take a bit of a break and stop at the various restaurants in the middle of the water.
The Food
Apart from eating at Leela and Bait @ Taj we also did try some local eateries and really enjoyed the local food that is traditionally served on banana leaves.
Overall, we felt that Kovalam was a fantastic getaway from the Mumbai madness – the serenity, its clean beaches with the backdrop of the iconic lighthouse and options for backwaters made it a perfect 10 in our books.
Start the tour from Kochi, also known as \”the Queen of the Arabian Sea\” as the commercial capital of Kerala and travel through Munnar, Alleppey and Kovalam.
